What to Do During the Tooth Extraction Healing Stage
Your Guide to a Smooth and Pain-Free Recovery
Getting a tooth extraction may sound scary, but with the right aftercare, healing can be smooth, fast, and free from complications. Whether it’s a wisdom tooth, a severely decayed tooth, or a tooth removed for orthodontic reasons—the healing stage is just as important as the procedure itself.
At Dr. Gogia’s Super Specialty Dental Care Centre, Rohtak, our goal is to make your dental experience as comfortable as possible—from the moment you walk in until complete healing is achieved.
In this blog, we’ll guide you through everything you should do (and avoid) during the tooth extraction healing process so you can recover safely and quickly.

Why Tooth Extraction Requires Aftercare
Tooth extraction involves removing a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. Once the tooth is out, the body begins the healing process by forming a blood clot in the socket. This clot is crucial for:
Stopping bleeding
Protecting nerve endings and bone
Allowing tissue to regenerate and close the wound
Improper care during this stage can result in complications like dry socket, infection, or delayed healing.

What to Expect: Stages of Healing
First 24 Hours:
Blood clot forms
Swelling and slight bleeding are normal
Pain and discomfort begin to ease by the end of the day
Days 2–3:
Swelling may peak
Pain decreases
Bruising may appear
Blood clot stabilizes
Days 4–7:
Tissue begins to regenerate
You can resume most activities
Follow-up appointment may be scheduled
Week 2 and Beyond:
Gums fully close over the socket
Bone continues to heal beneath the surface

DOs: How to Take Care During Healing
1. Rest and Take It Easy
Avoid strenuous activity for 24–48 hours
Keep your head elevated when lying down
Allow your body to heal
2. Bite Down on Gauze
Apply firm pressure with a sterile gauze pad for 30–45 minutes
Helps stop bleeding and forms the protective clot
3. Apply Cold Packs
Use an ice pack on the cheek near the extraction site for 15–20 minutes
Helps reduce swelling and pain
4. Take Prescribed Medications
Painkillers and antibiotics should be taken exactly as advised
Do not skip doses
5. Eat Soft, Cold Foods
Ideal foods: yogurt, smoothies, cold soups, mashed potatoes, khichdi, banana
Avoid hot, spicy, and crunchy foods
Use the opposite side of your mouth while chewing
6. Keep the Area Clean
Brush your teeth gently
Avoid brushing the extraction site for the first day
From Day 2, rinse with warm salt water (not mouthwash) after meals
7. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water
Keep your mouth moist to support healing
Use a spoon instead of a straw

DON’Ts: What to Avoid
Don’t Use Straws
The suction can dislodge the clot
Increases the risk of dry socket
Don’t Smoke or Use Tobacco
Delays healing
Increases risk of infection and dry socket
Don’t Touch the Wound
Avoid poking with fingers, tongue, or objects
Can introduce bacteria or disturb healing
Don’t Eat Hard or Crunchy Foods
Chips, nuts, toast, and fried items can irritate the site
Don’t Spit Forcefully
Can remove the clot and cause bleeding
Instead, let saliva drip out if needed
